In 1860, just as work on his
home neared completion, Foster Mark Kirksey's plans to have one of the
South's most splendid plantation homes were ended by the American Civil
War. In 1982, the prestigious National Trust for Historic Preservation
Honor Award was presented to Ray and Mary Swayze for the resoration of
Kirkwood. This American Greek Revival home is graced with eight massive
ionic columns, Carrara marble mantels, Waterford crystal chandeliers,
original furnishings, and wooded gardens on the 8 remaining acres of
the Kirksey homeplace.
Nearby attractions include other fine antebellum homes in Eutaw, the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, the Indian Mounds in Moundville, greyhound dog racing in Eutaw, antique shops and fine restaurants.
