INUSA Tour Guide Browser Notes
Elegance is simplicity! The INUSA Tour Guide was specifically written to the early HTML 2.0 DTD specification, plus two widely-adopted Netscape extensions, to provide you with the greatest consistency and reliability of presentation. (Sorry, we don't serve hot java here!) Nevertheless, no two browsers and no two computers display the same HTML file in exactly the same way, and what you see on your screen is not always what you get when printed on paper. Here are some suggestions on how to setup your PC for best viewing and printing.
VGA Display Driver
Use your the Windows Control Panel to set your VGA driver to
- 640 x 480 pixel size,
- 32K or 64K colors,
- small font,
to most closely match screen layout with paper layout. This format is also compatible with WebTV.
Browser
- Use the default style preferences for Netscape Navigator, Microsoft Explorer, Netmanage WebSurfer 5.
- For Websurfer 4, change H1 to 24p bold, H2 to 18p bold, H3 to 16p bold, H4 to 14p bold, H5 to 12p bold, H6 to 10p bold. Set regular text and anchors to 14p regular. Netmanage kerns their type heavily, so some of these type specs are 2 points larger than Netscape and Microsoft defaults in order to more closely match readibility and line lengths.
- The Windows 95 version of WebSurfer 5 runs words together when printed on paper, making them quite a challenge to read; the Windows 3.1 version prints with proper word spacing.
- Unfortunately, INUSA Tour Guide is now being delivered to you by an Apache shareware (unsupported) server that sends out some improperly tagged HTTP ASCII text in front of each HTML and GIF file that confuses some browers like WebSurfer. When we brought this bug to the attention of our ISP, their reply was "It's not my problem" (It will be when it comes time to renew our contract!).
Printer
- Canon BJC-210 bubble printers provide good color photos without requiring cartridge color registration;
- HP LaserJet 5 provides good black-and-white photo renditions.
