High Museum of Art

Atlanta, Georgia
Your Atlanta experience won't be complete with a visit to the High Museum of Art. Even before you enter the museum in midtown Atlanta, you are viewing an artistic masterpiece. The building itself, designed by Richard Meier and completed in 1983, is one of the city's best known landmarks and was named one of the top ten buildings of the 1980s by the American Institute of Architects.

Inside, the High's dazzling architectural features enhance an excellent and varied permanent collection. Architect Richard Meier produced galleries that interlock and interlook. Views stretch from one gallery to another, out onto the ramps that connect each level, and into the central atrium. The collection includes a growing body of contemporary art; a decorative arts collection featuring a superb group of 19th- and 20th- century American furniture; beautiful 19th century American landscape paintings; European painting and sculpture from the 14th through the 19th centuries; dramatic African masks and ceremonial figures; folk art, and photography. The Museum's light-filled atrium, the architectural centerpiece of the building, features a four-story-high wall drawing by Sol Le Witt. An education gallery offers children of all ages a place to try some hands-on art activities. This flexible space also features performances, workshops and classes keyed to programs throughout the Museum.

Visitors can enjoy espresso and other refreshments in the cafe area. The Museum Shop offers a range of unusual art-related gifts, posters, notecards, fine jewelry, and other lasting souvenirs of a memorable Museum visit.

In downtown Atlanta, the High Museum of Art offers additional programs at its Folk Art and Photography Galleries, located in the Georgia-Pacific Center in the heart of the business and convention district. Throughout the year at both locations, the High offers a wide range of special traveling exhibitions, guided tours, lectures, films, and special events.
