Fort George
Rt 166, Castine 04421 207-326-2420
This British fort was built in 1779 at the head of the Penobscot River
to defend against American attack. On July 28, 1779, American infantry
commanded by Paul Revere arrived in 45 ships. On August 14, 6 British
ships sailed up the river, and the resulting disaster proved to be the
worst defeat in American naval history; not one American vessel
survived. The British evacuated Castine in 1784 and burned the
buildings. They returned in 1814, reconstructing the ramparts, but the
fort was decommissioned in 1819. In 1940 the state acquired the site.
One magazine was reconstructed, and the earthworks are impressive.
