Two blocks from Portland's working waterfront, the Portland Regency is
the centerpiece of the city's historic Old Port Exchange. Built in 1895
as an armory for the Maine National Guard, it retained its function
until being decommissioned in the 1950s. Subsequently used as a
warehouse, the detailed Neo-Gothic Romanesque building was purchased in
1984 for conversion into a hotel, a complement to the popular restored
historic area. The building's architectural elements create unique
features in many of the spacious, traditionally appointed rooms:
turreted corners surround comfortable, airy sitting areas, while large,
highly detailed brick fireplaces are focal points of the hotel's
suites. The hotel's
Market Street Grille serves breakfast, lunch and
dinner in a casual, elegant style; the American menu includes fresh
seafood, home-baked breads and desserts. The harbor and other area
attractions are located nearby.
