Bear Run Nature Preserve

Western Pennsylvania Conservancy's 4,200-acre reserve has more than 20 miles of marked trails. Open daily. Hiking, nature study and ski touring.

Charles F. Lewis Natural Area

Memorial to the late Dr. Charles F. Lewis, a noted conservationist in western PA. Primitive trail is marked. Scenic waterfalls.

Cucumber Falls & Ferncliff Peninsula

Ohiopyle State Park, 1/2 mile southwest of Ohiopyle, PA
Waters of Cucumber Falls cascade into a waterfall bordered by a series of mountain peaks. Ferncliff Peninsula is a registered national natural landmark. A unique 100-acre nature preserve formed by a great horseshoe bend in the river.

Forbes State Forest

  • Adjacent to Linn Run, Laurel Ridge, Kooser and Laurel Hill State Parks. Access points to skiing and snowmobile trails are on Laurel Ridge, 2 miles south of Rt 30 and along Rt 31.
  • Roaring Run Natural Area in Donegal Township. Hiking trails.
  • Mount Davis is southern Somerset. 8 miles of hiking trails. Map available.
  • Quebec Run, near West Virginia border. Hiking trails and 70 miles of cross-country ski trails. Map available.

Friendship Hill National Historic Site

Gallitzin State Forest

Open year-round. Educational programs for school classes, scouts and other groups. Nature walks and nature trail system which includes the award-winning Painted Turtle Handicapped Accessible Trail.

Keystone State Park

Kooser State Park

Laurel Highlands Hiking Trail

70 miles. Hiking, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. Some portions of the trail, especially the southern end, are rugged. Average top elevation of 2,700 feet. 8 overnight areas, each of which contains 5 shelters, space for 30 tents, 2 comfort stations and source of water. Prior reservations mandatory for overnight camping on a first-come, first serve basis. Yellow blazes. Map available.

Loyalhanna Nature Trail

Located just west of Ligonier with parking lot accessible from the eastbound lane of US 30. 1-mile trail follows level terrain alongside Loyalhanna Creek.

Ohiopyle Falls

Famous scenic tourist attraction in Ohiopyle State Park. Cross-country skiing, 19 miles of snowmobile trails and 41 miles of hiking trails.

PW&S Railroad Mountain Bike Trail

Located in Forbes State Forest, high atop Laurel Hill Mountain. 37 mile network of 4 interconnecting loops along the Pittsburgh, Westmoreland and Somerset Railroad Line. Send $2 donation for a color brochure.
